UNION CITY, TN (April 24, 2025) – Masquerade Theatre has announced a significant donation to aid in the restoration and enhancement of its historic home, the Capitol Theatre in downtown Union City. This generous investment, made possible by a private donor with deep family ties to the region, will transform the theatre into a vibrant performing arts center, breathing new life into this cherished community landmark.

The renovation project, expected to be completed within 18 months, will modernize the 98-year-old Capitol Theatre while preserving its historic Art Deco charm. The updated venue will host live performances, traveling shows, workshops, motion picture screenings, and special events. Key improvements include accessible stadium-style seating, upgraded lighting and audio-visual technology, additional wing space for performances, and an expanded lobby and concessions area. A retractable digital projection system will bring movie screenings of classics, holiday favorites, and other films to the theatre, broadening its appeal to a bigger audience.

With the recent purchase of the former Bennett’s men’s shop next door, the project will include major expansions such as a catering kitchen for events, accessible restrooms, and an additional rehearsal stage that doubles as a space for dinner theatre performances and event rentals. A new second story will house a relocated green room and costume area for performers, including dressing rooms, makeup and hairstyling stations, restrooms, and lounge spaces, ensuring a premium experience for those taking the stage.

“This donation is not just an investment in the Capitol Theatre; it is an investment in our community and the arts in West Tennessee,” said Allison Butner, president of the Masquerade Theatre board of directors.“This revitalized space will enrich our local culture and increase the economic impact as visitors are drawn from across the region for the new experiences our theatre will offer.”
