All Characters except JoJo are age 15 and up; JoJo is age 12.

The Cat in the Hat playfully provokes change in the lives around him by creating obstacles and rites of passage. As in Dr. Seuss' books, the Cat's intentions, though mischievous, are benevolent. He is the main narrator and emcee of the show, appearing in multiple locations

Jungle Characters

Horton the Elephant's main objective in the show is to protect the defenseless charges in his care--Mayzie's abandoned egg and the invisible planet of Who. His second objective is to become connected with someone who will value him for who he is. Horton is a slow moving gentle creature and socially different than the other faster-moving animals in the Jungles of Nool. He is not sure if he is up to the tasks that face him, but he will never abandon anyone who needs his help. He is honest and faithful in all things.

Gertrude McFuzz is a wallflower more comfortable observing others than being center of attention. She wishes to win Horton's love, but feels that she is unattractive. She tries to fit in by embellishing her tail to attract his attention but abandons this when it's beauty becomes a physical hindrance and threatens Horton. She dedicates herself to helping Horton in his pursuits and is ultimately triumphant.

Mayzie Bird wishes to live the good life to the fullest and enjoys being admires and sought after. She has real star power and enjoys being the center of attention. When she is saddled with an egg to care for she realizes that she is not qualified for the job of mother and is grateful when Horton turns out to be a better caregiver than herself.

The Sour Kangaroo is a tyrannical marsupial with attitude! She has worked her way to the top off the jungle hierarchy and knows how hard life can be. She does not suffer fools, and believes that nonsense and dreams only leave people unhappy, without food or a home. She does not believe in the invisible planet of Who and feels that Horton's insistence of this 'dream' endangers the animals in the Jungle of Nool. She is a mother that does not tolerate silliness.

Roo is a baby Sour Kangaroo. He/she imitates the Sour Kangaroo in all things, including being tough and fierce, not a dreamer.

The three Bird Girls are flamboyant gorgeous jungle birds, decked out in the most beautiful outfits. The back up Mayzie Bird and generally have a good time. They are easily swayed by the crowd and adopt the prevailing belief. The also help the Cat in narrating the story.

The Wickersham Brothers are impulsive bad boys who like to monkey around. To feel superior, they like to bully those they feel are weaker. This comes more from insecurity rather than being evil. They posture more when the Bird Girls are around. They are uncomfortable with tenderness and contemplation.

Yertle the Turtle feels that he has superior gifts not shared by other animals and likes to be the one to make the decisions.

Vlad Vladikoff the eagle does the Wickershams' dirty work. He is scary and formidable.

The Jungle Animals are street-smart and live by the laws of the jungle. They follow the pack, needing to fit in. They question any individuality, especially when it threatens the lives of pack mates. They are easily excited and enthusiastically join in a hunt or a Kangaroo Court.

Whoville Characters

JoJo wants to be valued and loved for himself. He lives in a society that does not care about the things that he holds dear to his heart. He stands out in a world that values conformity and feels unappreciated by his family and community. When he expresses the wonderful thoughts in his head, instead of inspiring awe and approval he is met with disdain and fear. Forced into military training, he is taught to follow orders unquestioningly. But in the midst of danger his courage to speak his own mind and follow his intuition leads to recognition of his heroic visionary strengths.

Mr. Mayor wants to be a good leader and father. He is recently elected and proud of his new role. Mr. Mayor likes his world to be tidy and predictable, but a War is brewing and his son, JoJo is a dreamer whose "thinks" create messy and unpredictable results. He does not choose to send JoJo to military school lightly--he loves his son, but JoJo's disruptive behavior bewilders and embarrasses him.

Mrs. Mayor wants to a good mother and is proud to be the wife of the newly-elected Mayor of Whoville. Like her husband she is concerned that her son JoJo's "thinks" are disruptive and fears that his imaginative tendencies will only get him in more trouble. She decides with her husband to send her "different" child away for military training to cure him of errant thoughts and help him conform.

General Genghis Khan Schmitz sees the world as good or evil, weak or strong, boy or man. He believes in values of regimentation, conformity, rigorous physical training, and following orders without question. He champions fighting wars but does not think deeply about the core conflict. He feels that the Butter Side Downers oppose all that he knows is right.

The Grinch is a happy, green resident of Whoville, whose change of heart is happily re-told every Christmas.

The citizens of Whoville are innocent people who value conformity and clean living. Their thinking is restricted to what is familiar and any deviations from the norm are viewed with confusion and suspicion. The children in Whoville learned young that thinking outside the box was not okay. They try to please their families and community by living by the rules. Cindy Lou and Cindy Too are perfect little ladies. With harsh preparations for War the cadets live, march, and think as one. They are not brainwashed, but feel that it is easier to go along with your peers than think for yourself. Only JoJo is willing to risk punishment and ostracism to stand up for his beliefs
